With the wealth of bird life in the rural Algarve, we are lucky that the Barragem do Funcho just a short walk from the Quinta attracts many species. This is an ideal place to see egrets, birds of prey, cormorants, hoopoos, owls, bee-eaters and many more types of indigenous birds of the Algarve.
The Barragem do Funcho provides a great playground for those who enjoy kayaking in tranquil waters. Motorised craft are not permitted on the Kyaking area.
Quinta da Bica is a few meters from the Algarve Way and probably marks the mid point for anyone navigating the 243km route which stretches from Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vincente. We often provide B&B for those discovering the Algarve Way and have so far looked after 2-legged as well as 4-legged travellers!
There is something for everyone in the Algarve, from beautiful beaches, to water parks. If you decide to stay in São Bartolomeu de Messines you are just a couple of hours away from Portugal's capital, Lisbon. The Moorish town of Silves (15km) with its castle and meandering cobbled streets is worth a visit, and in August holds a Mediaeval Fair which is great fun. The village of Alte (10km) has great views and fresh spring water pools which are beautifully cool in the heat of the summer months.
